St Khanna of Jamal Abad
The Assyrian church of St Khanna of Jamal Abad is located on the Qushchi pass, on the mountain, two kilometer from Gawilan village. This Church was built at the same time as St Yohanna (John) in village of Gavilan.
According to the villagers , due to the timing, distance and material used to build these two Churches, there is a bond between the two!
Based on architectural design and historical evidence, according to Iran Ministry of Heritage and Archeology, it is estimated that the church was built in the 5th century in the Sassanid empire period, and considered an antique structure, it holds a unique place with respect to Assyrian churches.
The Church is built of rocks and materials available within the surroundings. The building consists of a small, rectangular room with thick walls, a carved roof and a small entry. The simplicity, small size and solid build with internal walls covered with chalk are the characteristics of the church. The building has no decoration and the external walls are all simple.
